Whiteman Air Force Base is the joint service home of the 509th Bomb Wing. In fact, you may know it as the world's only B-2 Spirit stealth bomber unit. The 509th Operations Group and 509th Maintenance Group are responsible for the flying mission at Whiteman, while the 509th Mission Support Group and 509th Medical Group are available to support the bombardment.

There are also several tenants, including the 131st Bomb Wing, 442nd Fighter Wing, 1-135th Attack Helicopter Squadron, 72nd Test and Evaluation Squadron, and 325th Weapons Squadron. Also, the 442nd Fighter Wing flies A-10s and the 131st Bombardment flies B-2s along with the 509th Bombardment. All of Whiteman's units support the same mission - to provide dynamic air power for the United States and provide reassurance to our allies and a formidable deterrent to our enemies.

In 1942, the United States Army Air Corps selected the site of the current day base as the new home for Sedalia Army Air Field. Army Air Force C-46 and C-47 transports were based at Sedalia until decommissioned in 1947.

Then in 1952, Sedalia was reactivated for the 340th Bombardment Wing. In June 1961, it was selected as the home of the 351st Strategic Missile Wing.

Like most installations, Whiteman AFB has several names. In 1955, Sedalia was renamed Whiteman Air Force Base. 2nd Lt. George A. Whiteman, who grew up in Missouri, was the first American airman to be killed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Also, the 509th Bomb Wing arrived at Whiteman in September 1990, where it was hibernating for over 2 years. The first operational B-2 Spirit Bomber, "The Spirit of Missouri", landed at Whiteman in December 1993.

Call the military housing office after you receive your orders to find out current wait times and what will be available to you when you PCS. While you are stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base, you will need to visit the MHO to receive housing counseling and guidance.

Non-support housing is offered to non-supporting airmen in the ranks of E-1 through E-3 and E-4 with less than 3 years of service. Each airman is provided with a private bedroom, furniture, bedding and other necessary supplies for a comfortable life. Non-supporting pilots with more than 3 years of service and above the rank of E-4 may live in the local community.

There are no DoDEA schools at Whiteman AFB and there are many other options. However, there is a school on the grounds that is operated and managed by the Knob Noster School District. In the town you will find an additional elementary school, a middle school and a high school.

There are other school districts that also serve the grandchildren that Whiteman calls home. This includes Warrensburg and Sadalia.
