Petty Officer 2nd Class Brandon McPhann, 29, was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago and enlisted in his 20s.

Officer McPhan never imagined he would become interested in the culinary arts when he enlisted, but he did. He spent five years as a cook aboard a ship before returning to the Great Lakes Naval Station.
"I was in high school, my brother was in the Navy, and my mom told me I should try the military," McPhan said. "It's good for you and something you can look forward to for the rest of your life."
"We have to go at 4 am to get breakfast at 6 am," he said. “The last meal was at 5:30 pm, so we cleaned up at 6:30. It's tough, but it makes you a better person."
"One of the things that will improve society for veterans is people who really understand that life is difficult for veterans," he said. "During the Vietnam War, they didn't have the resources they have now."

Less than a mile from the facility is Cap. James A. Lowell is home to Federal Medical Center, which serves about 40,000 Navy personnel each year.
The hospital is a unique partnership between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense and is the only federal hospital in the country.
"I think veterans especially enjoy the atmosphere of seeing active duty youth and sharing old stories from their Vietnam days," said Capt. James A. of the Federal Health Care Center. Lovell said. "Also, I think active duty would love to hear stories from our veterans ... I can tell you, at least in the VA [Veterans Affairs] department, you're not going to see any 2- or 3-year-old patients. Seeing a World War 97 veteran getting an X-ray Then their mothers go to the children's hospital."
The hospital was renamed in 2010 in honor of USN Captain James A. Lovell, after Apollo 13 astronaut, North Chicago WA Medical Center and in 2010, the former Naval Health Clinic of the Great Lakes.

Christopher Smith is an Army veteran and executive director of the USO of Illinois, founded in 1941 to provide food services and assistance to soldiers and their families.
"My military experience was very good," Smith said. "Unfortunately, I lost my father when I was a teenager, and when I decided to enlist, the honor of his service taught me life lessons, discipline, and continues to this day."
"For me, the most important lesson in life is to put others first," Smith said. “As a military officer, your troops come first, they eat first, they get supplies first, because their welfare and efficiency motivates the entire team. So whether it's my dad, my husband, or a leader in the USO, making sure everyone is taken care of is the number one priority. "
In her current role, Smith oversees nine centers across the state, including the USO Great Lakes Center.

USO Great Lakes Center Administrator Jeremiah Hours, a retired Navy SEAL, said the USO is focusing on that additional support.
"Our tagline says power behind power," he said. "We're really trying to provide a home away from home ... a free zone where they can come and relax and allow us to load their military cargo in a short amount of time. "We're here to provide a sense of comfort and relaxation so they can get some rest before they go back and do what our country is asking them to do. Can do tough things," he said.
Military wife Krista Shanot and her family took advantage of these resources while living abroad in Tokyo for 20 years.
"You have to be tough when your spouse goes into the military," Shanot said. "I left my country when I was 20 years old. You have to struggle. You are all alone."

Shanot's children were all born at the Okokosuka shipyard, and she had to get used to her husband being away for months at a time.
"Sometimes you see people not appreciating what they have, I see my kids sacrificing their holidays, their birthdays, you see other people don't care, that's what I want," Shanot said.
She recently returned to the base where her husband graduated from boot camp years ago. Shanot works as an operations specialist for the USO while her husband trains new sailors.
"To every military woman out there," Shanot said. "I know there are challenges, but if you trust the support of the military and you trust each other, if you're married to a wonderful person, trust each other."

Chanot is spreading the message to those who are not in the army but want to support their army.
"Practice your rights first," Shanot said. "I don't understand why people don't vote... Appreciate the freedom you enjoy. What you buy gives you freedom because someone has sacrificed for it."
"It's an honor," Smith said. “Those of us who raise our hands and swear by our Constitution, we do so with mercy. "So I feel humbled when people thank me for my service because I didn't thank them."
